When I Entered That Building

Born again 28th February 1948. That was the day I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. In John's Gospel chapter 3 verse 3, we read "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God." Let me tell you how it happened.

As a young boy I was made to go to Sunday School. There, I heard the stories in the Bible. At the age of 14, I started to work and it was at that time I began to fall deeper into sin. The Bible says in Romans chapter 3 verse 23, "For all have have sinned and come short of the glory of God."

I began to smoke and was brought into the bar by my workmates, unknown to the family at home. I came from a good home, but not a Christian home. There were eight in my family, father, mother, two brothers and three sisters. I remember one day the family sitting around the table having lunch, when my brother said that he had given his heart to the Lord. I watched his progress in the Christian Life, as he would read the Word of God and sing hymns.

Each Sunday night he would ask me to go to Church with him, but I always refused until one Sunday night I went with him to Great Victoria Street Baptist Church. There I listened to the Word being preached, wishing it was time to go home. After the Church service was over, my brother and some of his friends were going to the Assembly Buildings where some Americians were having a Gospel Crusade.

When I entered that building, I was amazed to see the crowds of people, young and old, singing, and a vast choir up at the front. I listened to the Word of God and realised I needed to be saved. After the preacher had finished, I watched as he asked those who would like to trust the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour, to come to the rooms at the side of the building. Many made their way to the front.

I went home that night under conviction of sin. As I lay on my bed, the Lord was speaking to me heart. I went back to that meeting again and on the last night, I gave my heart to the Lord.

I was baptised in Great Victoria Street Baptist Church and applied for Membership. I met my wife there and in 1952 we were married in the Church. We have two great sons. One has trusted the Lord as his personal Saviour and we continue to pray for the other, that very soon he will also put his trust in our Saviour.

Yours in Christ.
